Don't get me wrong--I'm a huge Sopranos fan. But I think in terms of pure writing, Deadwood has the Sopranos beat. The monologues and soliloquies of Deadwood are Shakespearean in grandeur and aspiration. It would be hard for me to compare story arc, characterization, etc., but for my money, there's no more mesmerizing sight on television than Al Swearengen monologuing to the bobbing head of a fellatrix.

Better than the Sopranos? Make your case. PS I've never seen Deadwood.
