Emerson, by Lawrence Buell (Belknap Press, 2004)...I was in charge of Phi Beta Kappa Book Awards the year it won the Christian Gauss Award for literary criticism. It's not as good a pop/readable biography as the Richardson book, but it's got some serious grist for those trying to analyze Emerson's philosophical side. Some very smart people, whose opinions I respect, picked it as the winner.
